Changes of Plan

This year has seen a number of plan changes that have affected my life in unexpected ways.

PLAN A was to come to Canada working for my previous company.  Life could have been easy, but the economic climate in Japan after the earthquake left all decisions hanging apart from my decision to actually move.

So I made PLAN B, to get a temporary work visa for Canada, also known as the International Experience Canada.  The draw of this particular visa was that it would enable me to get work straightaway and keep myself afloat.  They offer a certain number of visas a year and the eligibility criteria is different for each nationality.

However, I made one rather unfortunate error which has left me high and dry for the past few months.  As it turns out, for a British citizen such as myself, you have to be resident in the UK for a period of 3 years before your trip to Canada.  I'm not really sure why and it doesn't seem to be reflected in other nationalities' requirements.  If I were a Japanese citizen I wouldn't need to have lived in Japan for 3 years previously nor if I were French.

So I wasted rather a lot of time, energy and money trying to get this visa and was inevitably told that I was refused.  Luckily though, the visa office returned all the documentation I submitted so that I may apply again in the future.

PLAN C, which I am currently working on, features looking for a company willing to sponsor me for a temporary work visa.  Still waiting...

To keep my optimism though I feel that this picture provides a little encouragement.
